Faculty of Medicine (Unani) earlier known as Jamia
Tibbia was established in 1935 at Gali Qasim Jaan, Delhi. Later in 1973, it
was named as Hamdard Tibbi College. It was shifted to Hamdard Nagar Campus
in 1980 and started B.U.M.S. course under University of Delhi . After the
establishment of Jamia Hamdard in 1989, it merged with the University and
got the status of Faculty of Medicine (Unani) . Earlier the intake for
B.U.M.S. was 30 which was enhanced to 50 in 1994. In the same
year, the Government sanctioned M.D. in two disciplines (Ilmul Advia and
Moalijat). The faculty also runs one year course of Pre-Tibb for
candidates coming from Madrasa stream. The Faculty conducts teaching and
research in Unani Medicine and Surgery. The students are imparted
instruction with extensive knowledge of the fundamental theories and basic
principles of Unani System of Medicine as well as the modern medical
subjects such as Physiology, Social and Preventive Medicine, Pharmacology,
Pathology and Forensic Medicine.
The Faculty has been recognized as one of the centres of higher
education and research in Unani Medicine by Ministry of Health , Govt. of
India .

The facilities at the University Hospital’s
Clinic/Dept./O.P.D. of Physiotherapy shall be fully equipped with IEC
standard equipment to enable the Post-graduates in different specialities
of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy for a thorough exposure to fulfill their need and
requirement as a part of training.
Teaching
The Faculty offers a three year post-graduate course
leading to the award of degree of M.D. Unani in Ilmul Advia,Tahaffuzi-vo-Samaji Tibb (P.S.M. - Preventive and
Social Medicine) and Moalijat;
a four and half years course followed by one year compulsory and rotatory
internship for the award of Kamil-e-Tibb-o-Jarahat (B.U.M.S.-Bachelor of
Unani Medicine and Surgery) degree and a one year Pre-Tibb course.
In addition, the Faculty offers
programmes of studies for the award of Diploma in Medical Laboratory
Technology (D.M.L.T.), Diploma in X-Ray & ECG Technology, Bachelor
of Physiotherapy (B.P.Th.), Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (B.O.Th.), Master
of Occupational Therapy (M.O.Th.) and Master of Physiotherapy (M.P. Th.).
Faculty of Medicine (Unani) has continued to pursue
teaching and research in Unani Medicine and Surgery. The students are
imparted extensive knowledge of the fundamental theories and basic
principles of Unani System of Medicine as well as the modern medical
subjects such as Physiology, Social and Preventive Medicine, Pharmacology,
Pathology and forensic Medicine. The strength of students in the faculty
is 387. From this academic session (2000-2001), MD in
Hifzan-e-Sehat (Preventive and Social Medicine) is also being started.
Majeedia hospital is attached to the Faculty for purpose of
trainning the students in out-patient as well as indoor-patient care. It is a
recognized 150 bedded teaching Hospital in the modern and the Unani System of
treatment .

The
deparment of Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology) deals with the study of Unani drugs at
Undergraduate and Post graduate levels. It also performs teaching of Unani
Pharmacy in D.Pharm and B.Pharm, plus couirses of Faculty of Pharmacy. Instructions
are imparted regarding place of occurrence, morphology,
characteristics features, pharmacological actions, medicinal uses and
compounding of Unani drugs in the light of principles of Unani Medicine . Research
programmes are designed so as to develop better and cheaper drugs keeping in
view the needs of general masses of the country and in consonance with the
National Health Priority Programmes. The academic activities are performed
with the help of advanced technology in teaching and research with a
multidisciplinary approach to develop interest and confidence among the students
towards the Unani system of Medicine. The dept. consists of the competent
teaching and supporting staff. Besides the services of outside experts of Unani
Medicine and other allied fields are also availed from time to time by arranging
guest lectures, seminars and discussions on topics of prime importance.
The department was
upgraded to P.G. level in 1994. The first batch completed their work in 1998.
Since then thirteen students have been awarded M.D. in Ilmul Advia.
Most of the research work carried out in the dept. has been presented at
National and International conferences in India and abroad. The work on
Hepatoprotective, Antidiabetic, Anti ulcer, Antiasthmatic, Antileucorrhoeal and
Neuropharmacological studies of Unani drugs have been published in reputed
Journals. New formulations have also been developed. The main areas of research
in the dept. of Ilmul Advia are Experimental Pharmacology, Clinical
Pharmacology, Standardization and Quality control of Unani Drugs and Formulation
Development.
The department of Ilmul Advia proposes to start certain new courses viz.:
Diploma and degree courses in Unani Pharmacy; re-orientation course
for in-service Pharmacists (courses to be started with the help of Dept. of ISM,
Govt. of India.) and P.G. Dip. in Quality Control of Unani Drugs and an
orientation programme in Unani / Herbal Medicine for the sponsored professionals
qualified in other systems of medicine who may be willing to be acquainted with
the Unani system of medicine.

Research
Several herbal drugs particularly “Ajmaloon” for
hypertension, “Jigrin” for liver disorders and “Lipotab” for
hypercholestraemia, all formulated by Janab Hakim Abdul Hameed Sahib, have
been clinically tested at Majeedia Hospital of the University and in other
medical colleges and allied hospitals.
