About us: Overview
JAMIA HAMDARD (DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY), NEW DELHI (http://jamiahamdard.edu/)- Jamia Hamdard was conferred the status of “Deemed to be University” under Section 3 of 1956 UGC Act by the then Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India, on 10th May 1989. Since then it has steered ahead through all challenges and has gained an enviable position in the field of research and education. With its impressive track record in research, the University has a distinction of being consecutively accredited in “A” grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in all the three cycles since 2003 and recently it has been ranked with A+ grade in the fourth cycle of NAAC accreditation. This is the first University in Delhi to have accreditated in ‘A’ Grade.  The University is a conglomerate of Schools with distinct teaching and research programmes which are spread out at all education levels from Diploma to Ph.D. degrees. However, its major focus is ‘healthcare education’. Jamia Hamdard has a rare distinction of being a seat of higher education in traditional system of Unani Medicine, cutting edge Biological and Chemical Science, Pharmacy, Nursing, and other Allied Health Science disciplines. Healthcare education has been fortified through establishment of a Medical School named as Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR) with the approval of National Medical Commission (previously named as Medical Council of India) for imparting medical education in modern system (MBBS, MD, MS etc.). Another distinguished feature is the presence of on-campus active research and academic collaboration with organizations of international repute such as Clinical Pharmacy Unit of SunPharma, and BD-JH FACS Academy of Becton Dickinson Biosciences. The University has substantially contributed in the area of quality research and has set high standards for Ph.D. theses and scientific publications and citations. A fully functional Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Research & Development Cell ensure quality standards of academic and research programmes. In NIRF ranking released by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in the Pharmacy Category, Jamia Hamdard remained top ranked institution on 6 occasions out of 9 rankings and in the remaining three rankings Jamia Hamdard ranked No. 2 and 3 positions. In NIRF Rankings 2024, Jamia Hamdard again secured the top position in Pharmacy in NIRF. Besides NIRF, Jamia Hamdard has also been figured in the World University Rankings conducted by the Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Recently, it has been included in the list of eight centrally-funded ‘Deemed to be Universities’ for a performance-based government funding.

Declaration of Jamia Hamdard as Deemed to be University vide Gazette Notification of Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India vide Notification No. F.9-18/85-U.3 dated 10th May, 1989 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The copy of notification is attached.
